RB - Time gets away from me. I have heard that the truth of it becomes more clear the older you get. True already for me ... When I was about 10 years old, we could play baseball for days in just a couple hours ... we NEVER got to the beach because the ride in the car took so long. Waiting until I was going to be 12 so I could hunt with my dad was just an UNBELIEVABLE drag ... I was sure it would never happen. Graduating from high school was beyond comprehension ... I simply could not even imagine being that old.
October 9th was former Beatle John Lennon's birthday ... he would have been 71 years old ... Seventy-one? John Lennon? HOW is THAT possible?!? Steve Jobs, founder of Apple computers, died last week at 56 years old ... only a couple years older than me. Impossible, yet it all seems too clear, because I can imagine, very easily, being those ages. After attaining a certain age - I don't remember when it happened - it was no longer much of a stretch to see myself older ... much older ... and too fast.
Days are indeed passing more quickly now, but sometimes there is a break and time seems to slow a bit; unfortunately, it is usually something like when I am experiencing pain, waiting for a pain-relieving pill to kick in. Or when I wake up at 3 a.m., no longer sleepy. Mostly though, time rockets by at an alarming rate. I realized that I mark the rate of time passing by the oddest things ... cutting my fingernails is the latest milestone. Suddenly, the fingernails I swear I just cut - certainly only a day or two ago - need to be cut again. I look at them, mildly panicked, desperately trying to recall as much as possible of the days that must have gone by, because they obviously did. It is mind-boggling to realize the probability that at some point haircuts spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart will do the same thing. Why does that happen?
Einstein's ideas result in consequences like 'moving clocks run slow'. Children are always moving fast ... running everywhere as soon as they are able to ... do their clocks run more slowly because they are constantly in hyper-drive unless asleep? ... I remember how it felt! Is that the key? We have to be active and moving fast or time will speedily decay right along with our aging minds and bodies?
Well, of course that's the key ... and we really know that already, don't we? Yes, we do ... children, famous musicians, athletes, politicians and celebrities are a gauge where we note the time passing more personally and more clearly. We can't avoid it with celebrities ... they are kept in our attention if you watch news media at all ... and they remind us that we should eat better, exercise more, and seize the day while we still can because WOW! those celebrities are looking so freaking old! All while we hesitate to make the connection that we are getting so freaking old, too.
So ... what is your favorite holiday? How many of them do you have left? What will you do to slow your clock? What will I do? For one thing, I am going to have a WANDY party - for "We Are Not Dead Yet"! And have one every year ... so friends and family will get together to celebrate that we are NOT dead yet, and not wait until we are in order to have those great parties people always throw. I want the great food and drink and conversation now while I can enjoy it!
In the meantime, let's enjoy great food, great drinks, and great music that is available every week at Genoa ...
